Podcast: Pivoting to a career in software

Tuesday, August 11, 2020

When discussing my career change to software development, one bit of advice I regularly mention is to "learn how you learn best." Whether you're attempting to build things on your own, or trying to soak up all the information in your coding bootcamp, the name of the game is to figure out how you internalize the deluge of high-level concepts and terminology coming your way.

At the start, I didn't rely much on technical documentation because, well, I couldn't really understand it. I instead would look for articles and tutorials that provided an expanded explanation. I also found that I really enjoyed videos, which allowed me to sit back and focus on the content being presented as opposed trying to speed-type some notes or copy and paste the first Stack Overflow solution with a green check mark (you know what I mean).

Pluralsight is a company providing loads of skills training video content. It has certainly helped me in my career transition, most recently when I was learning Swift and making my first iOS app.

The folks at Pluralsight reached out to me to ask if I'd sit down for a podcast about pivoting to a career in software development, and I jumped at the opportunity. I saw it as another opportunity to try and demystify the tech world, and explain that anyone can get into it: you just have to start trying to build something!

A shout out to Plurasight's Daniel Blaser for reaching out about the opportunity, and for putting together a great episode.
